2010 World GP Hydroplane C'ships for Taree?

Taree Aquatic Powerboat Club’s committee will decide within the next two months whether to apply to host the 2010 World GP Hydroplane Championships.

“We have to nominate by October,’’ power boat commodore Neil Ryan explained. “So we’ll have to decide within the next couple of months whether we’ll put in a bid.’’

The club hosted the titles in 2005. This two week event attracted 10 teams, the majority from Australia and was conducted over two weekends. At the conclusion of the 2005 championship, the then powerboat commodore Laurie Dege said he was confident the event would eventually return here.

“We learnt a lot from 2005,’’ Neil Ryan said this week. “Our committee is much the same as it was then. There are a few areas that we can improve on and I’m sure we will if we get the opportunity in 2010.’’
Mr Ryan said the club will target more corporate support from outside Greater Taree if the bid is successful.

The club will have to guarantee a certain amount of sponsorship to host the titles. The 2005 championship was held in mid-June. There was early speculation that crowds of up to 15,000 would line the riverbank to watch the racing. While support was solid, it didn’t attract anywhere near this figure – cold weather and a wet fortnight being blamed.

Mr Ryan conceded that June isn’t an ideal month. However, he added that the date is determined by the controlling body. There was some speculation that should the championship return here it would be married with the Taree club’s highly successful Easter Classic. But Mr Ryan has already ruled this out. “The championships are too big to work in with another event,’’ he said. “And we have a very full program with the Easter Classic as it is. We couldn’t run the two of them together.’’

A criticism of the 2005 championship was the lack of activity on the water in the lengthy delays between GP races. The Taree club tried to organise other classes to race here, but this proved difficult as it was out of season.

Mr Ryan confirmed this matter will be closely looked at should his committee decide to bid for the 2010 titles. “The championship was successful in 2005. “I know that we could do even better if we’re given the chance again,’’ he said
