Toy boats have fascinated the young (and the young at heart) for centuries and now another generation will experience the wonder of toy boats with the National Maritime Museum’s school holiday program – Kids Deck: Bateaux Jouets, 13 - 27 April 2008.

Themed around the museum’s major new exhibition Bateaux Jouets – toy boats from Paris 1850-1950, the fun-filled holiday program will include a large selection of toy boats with simple mechanisms such as pulleys and gears – similar to those featured in the exhibition – for children to explore and play with.

They can also race boats in our large, custom-built wooden 'pond' maze…who will be the first to cross the 'pond' and reach the finish line? There’ll even be a wonderful selection of French-themed period costumes to dress up in as you race.Then finish the session with some art and crafts. Kids can make their own toy boat to take home, using colourful found objects to decorate it.

Hourly Kids Deck sessions will run daily from 10 am to 4 pm. Entry is $7 per child, adults free. Recommended for children 5-12 years old.

Free Battle of the Bateaux Sunday 27 April 2008
Come along and join the action in this remote-control boat bonanza. You’re invited to bring your own remote-control boat or use one of ours for this interactive on-water spectacle. There will be prizes galore and an amazing range of the latest and greatest remote-control boats to see! From 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday 27 April. Register your interest at www.anmm.gov.au/events.

And don’t miss the free film screenings of the 1962 animated musical Gay Purr-ee. This charming children’s cartoon follows Mewsette, a French country cat voiced by Judy Garland, who goes to Paris in the Gay ‘90s. Screens daily at 1.30 pm.

Entry to the museum’s exhibitions, including Bateaux Jouets – toy boats from Paris 1850-1950, is free. Admission charges apply to visit the museum’s vessels and holiday program.
