Superboats set to supercharge Harbour

'Powering down Sydney Harbour'    Ray Schembri
Sydney Harbour will roar into action as never before this weekend (8-9 March) for the inaugural Sydney Superboat Grand Prix.

Marking round five in the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships, the event is the first ever powerboat race to compete on a closed circuit inside Sydney Harbour and will provide an awesome spectacle for the conclusion of Sydney Harbour Week.

Over 20 superboats, competing in several classes, will rip around the cosmopolitan course at speeds in excess of 220km/h! The Class One boats typically complete about 13 laps (185km) during each hour-long race. Other championship classes competing in Sydney include the Supercat Outboard, Supercat Outboard Lite and Super Vee Lite.

Spectators can take in the action from the water – at various locations outside of the exclusion zone – and from the shore. Some of the spectator vantage points include: Mrs Macquarie Point, Bradleys Head, Point Piper, Robertsons Point, Kurraba Point and Bennelong Point.

Internationally, superboat events of this kind are big business. Crowds of 900,000 have been known to gather along shorelines in Europe to experience the adrenalin-charged action.

Among a host of other activities, the pole position shoot-out will take place from 2pm on Saturday 8 March.

The main event of the Sydney Superboat Grand Prix will rev into action around 3.30pm on Sunday 9 March, commencing an hour-long battle with the elements at break-neck speed. Don’t miss it!
