BIA says new Lease policy is exciting

'BIA logo'
The Boating Industry Association of NSW (BIA) and it’s divisional body, Marina Association of NSW have welcomed a new Commercial Lease Policy announced by the Hon. Joe Tripodi, Minister for Ports and Waterways.

The BIA supports the direction and principles of the new NSW Maritime’s Commercial Lease Policy. It brings to a conclusion years of deliberation and delivers on a primary objective of the Sharing Sydney Harbour Regional Action Plan 'to provide a commercially secure operating environment for the maritime industry enabling continuing investment in business activities'.

Roy Privett, BIA General Manager said 'the marine industry which is dependent on Government for its tenure and hence its ability to conduct business to provide boating facilities and waterways access had operated in an uncertain and insecure situation for many years. The new Commercial Lease Policy will provide a solid platform that will encourage modernisation of existing facilities and development of new waterfront infrastructure for the storage, repair, maintenance, and use of watercraft and waterways access'.

'The new policy will greatly improve the marine industries confidence to invest in access opportunities and facilities. This confidence arises from the NSW Government providing a commercially secure lease tenure platform with certainty for future waterfront business activities. It delivers a clear message that the NSW Government is creating a proper operating environment to work in partnership with industry to meet consumer demands for quality waterways access, services, storage facilities and recreational boating opportunities'.

'We congratulate Minister Joe Tripodi on introducing this policy initiative that will give the marine industry, recreational boaters and the general community an exciting outlook with conditions that are conducive to long term planning, re-investment and growth. All of which are dependent on transparent and commercial approach so that the length of lease tenure reflects the level of investment'.

The new Lease Policy will greatly assist in the protection and modernisation of maritime infrastructure, and make a valuable contribution to the NSW Economy. The recreational boating industry currently contributes $1,167M to the NSW economy and supports just over 20,000 jobs both directly and indirectly. The industry generates $3,380M in spending attributable to NSW operations and $1,380M expenditure on holidays and day trips associated with boating activities in NSW. It has a 4.3% share of NSW’s total day trip market and one of the top 10 activities people undertake.'
