Port Adelaide’s unique dolphin colony is at risk from speeding boats and jet skis, and urgent action must be taken to protect the dolphins that live in the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, says Greens Parliamentary Leader Mark Parnell.
The call comes as the Environment Department prepares for a ‘Dolphin Day’ on Sunday at Port Adelaide to educate the community about the Dolphin Sanctuary.
'We are incredibly blessed to have such an amazing wildlife experience right on our doorstep,' said Mr Parnell.
'Yet, thoughtless boat and jet ski owners continue to flout the law and place these creatures in danger.
'The whole boat speed regime in the Dolphin Sanctuary needs to be reviewed. In some places boat speeds could be increased, while in other more sensitive areas speeds need to be reduced to minimize the risk of dolphins being hurt.
'Equally, the Government needs to work harder to ensure boat owners and jet ski operators comply with speed restrictions.
'Otherwise, intrusive vehicles such as jet skis should be banned altogether from the Sanctuary.
'In a place as wonderful as the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, the issue of boat speed is not just about maritime safety. It is critical for creating a safe habitat.
'We are very fortunate to be able to share the Barket Inlet and Port River with one of nature’s most extraordinary creatures.
'The Government must do much more to ensure these creatures remain safe and free from being struck by fast moving boats,' he said.
