Sail-World.com : WA joins the fight against Gillard Government marine park zones
WA joins the fight against Gillard Government marine park zones

The Australian Marine Alliance (AMA) today announced a historical alliance between the recreational fishing and boating sectors and the professional fishing industry, with the Geraldton Professional Fishermans Association in Western Australia partnering with the AMA.

Dean Logan Chief Executive of the AMA commented, 'Historic policy lows require a historic and courageous response and this is one of those. Traditionally the professional and recreational sectors have fought over resource allocation, today that fight ceases.

'What this partnership shows is that Australian fishers stand shoulder to shoulder to fight a common enemy.

'Our threat is not unsustainable fishing practices at all, but rather an insidious well financed political agenda based on animal rights that seeks to rid our waters of all forms of food harvesting.'

The relationship with the Geraldton Professional Fishermans Association of WA is bolstered by the partnership last week between the AMA and the Queensland Inshore Seafood Council. The AMA will also announce within days the first board in Australian history that brings together recreational fishing and boating leaders with professional gill, fin, net, long line and trawl fisherman in Queensland.

Mr Logan continued, 'Minister Burke, his department and the Greens may well listen to 460,000 computer generated submissions from the USA and snub their nose at Australian fishers, boaters, industry and coastal communities, but they do so at their peril.

'The Australian solider has been renown for his larrikin spirit, but when pushed to fight for what was right, he fought as hard as any solider. This is what Australian fisherman, both recreational and commercial, are now doing nationally.

'Within the past 6 weeks the AMA has secured the support of over 50 separate professional fisherman, peak industry groups and recreational anglers from every single State and Territory in Australia. In essence the Tony Burke led process is now all about trust.

'Does Minister Burke and the Australian Greens place their trust in USA funded environmental NGO’s or do they empower and work with Australian fishers, Australian industry and Australian communities to take care of our own marine environment.

'The ball is now in Minister Burke’s court to adopt a 100% management approach, not this arbitrary nonsense of colouring in the marine environment for Green preferences. We are tired of talking and tired of bureaucratic led claytons consultation. The solution on the table is bad for industry, it’s bad for communities and it delivers far less for the environment. That’s why we are all standing together and saying NO,' ended Mr Logan.
