World Match Racing Tour Danish Open - YANMAR Racing has perfect start

Tough conditions on day one of the 2010 Danish Open at Bornholm, the seventh event on this year's ISAF World Match Racing Tour. Wind gusts up to 33 knots provided some amazing action with one match won by the crew with better speed through their broach. Four-time ISAF World Match Racing Champion Peter Gilmour (AUS) and his YANMAR Racing crew, Cameron Dunn, mainsheet – tactician (New Zealand), Trimmer Thierry Douillard (France), Pitman Yasuhiro Yaji (Japan) and bowman Martin Berntsson (Sweden) overcame the heavy conditions to win all three of their matches, the only team to finish the day with an all win record. YANMAR Racing Team tactician and mainsheet hand Cameron Dunn detailed their day. ‘Sailing against 2009 World Champion Adam Minoprio and his BlackMatch Racing team we decided the best start would be with good separation to windward. We thought the pin end of the line was slightly left biased but we were pretty sure the right would pay at the top of the course. ‘It was 18-20 knots at the start and building. We almost started on split tacks, with us on port at the Committee end. Adam was in the middle of the line on starboard. We tacked back immediately to be windward of him on starboard. ‘At the first meeting he lee-bowed us, we did that three times up the beat, until the right hand shifts came in towards the top of the course and we got control. We rounded four lengths ahead and YANMAR Racing sailed away with the match. ‘Against Mads Ebler (DEN) Ebler Matchracing, Gilly got good control in the pre-start with two minutes to go. We ended up a long way from the line; we led him back and held him out to win the start. We found some good shifts early on the beat and we opened up a lead from there. ‘Our third match was against Michael Buckley (USA) MB Sailing, who had just beaten Mathieu Richard and had taken Minoprio to the wire, so we were wary. ‘We sailed against him before the start of the day and we felt we had speed on him. We watched his races and saw how he was hitting the corners, playing hard for shifts. ‘YANMAR Racing had nice control of him in the pre-start. We started relatively tight to windward of him, two boat lengths above him, just above the pin on starboard tack. We held him out to the lay line, right out on the left. ‘He was still close on our stern at the top mark, but we rounded into a big puff, 25 knots with a fast hoist, we were a little bit out of control. ‘He had a bad hoist and missed the puff and we really scooted away. We put four-five boat lengths on him on the first run and that was the race. ‘Overall today with the conditions very shifty, we did not want to get engaged too closely with other boats. We were happy with our boat speed, we sailed the shifts and stayed a little bit loose. ‘This is our best event start all year, 3-0 is a nice feeling, and it’s good for confidence. ‘Tomorrow will be a very different day with wind from the south, probably 10 knots less than today. We will need to work out the conditions and start well. Our first two races are against Mathieu Richard the Tour leader and the impressive young New Zealander William Tiller. ‘After the first round robin its tougher than many events as only the top four teams go through to the semi-finals so winning early is important - a little more pressure. ‘YANMAR Racing need another good start tomorrow. There are realistically seven or eight teams fighting for four slots and they are all very much class acts. ‘So it is going to be an exciting day.’ Danish Open Standings after Day 1 of Qualifications Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing 3-0 Torvar Mirsky (AUS) Mirsky Racing Team 4-1 Mathieu Richard (FRA) French Match Racing Team 2-1 Adam Minoprio (NZL) ETNZ/BlackMatch Racing 2-1 Ben Ainslie (GBR) TEAMORIGIN 3-2 Björn Hansen (SWE) Hansen Global Team 3-2 Francesco Bruni (ITA) Azzurra 3-2 Bertrand Pacé (FRA) Aleph Sailing Team 2-3 Mads Ebler (DEN) Ebler Matchracing 1-2 Michael Buckley (USA) MB Sailing 1-2 William Tiller (NZL) Full Metal Jacket Racing 0-3 Suzanne Ward (DEN) Team Ward 0-5 YANMAR Racings 2010 Tour Record 10th — Stena Match Cup Sweden '10 (Crew: Kazuhiko Sofuku, Cameron Dunn, Yasuhiro Yaji, Thierry Douillard) 1st — Portimão Portugal Match Cup '10 (Crew: Kazuhiko Sofuku, Cameron Dunn, Yasuhiro Yaji, Thierry Douillard) 5th — Korea Match Cup '10 (Crew: Martin Berntsson, Cameron Dunn, Yasuhiro Yaji, Thierry Douillard) 6th — Match Race Germany '10 (Crew: Martin Berntsson, Nils Bjerkäs, Yasuhiro Yaji, Cristian Pontin) 11th — Match Race France '10 (Crew: Thierry Douillard, Yashuhiro Yaji, David Gilmour) World Match Racing Tour Results 2009 — fourth Overall 2008 — eighth Overall 2006-’07 — fifth Overall 2005-’06 — first Tour Champion 2004-’05 — first Tour Champion 2003-’04 — first Tour Champion 2000-’01— sixth Overall 2000 — fourth Overall
