After a series of queries received by the RYA regarding the status of the Venture Cup London to Monte-Carlo Race, RYA Powerboat Racing Manager Jeni Jelf explains the current status of the iconic race.
'Firstly I would like to make it clear that the RYA remains strongly supportive of this exciting event. The London to Monte Carlo race promises to bring together a fleet of offshore powerboats in a spectacle the likes of which has not been seen for many years. We are in daily communication with the event organisers, who have made strong progress in bringing together the many logistical and safety elements required to run an event of this magnitude.
'However, a number of essential requirements must be fulfilled before Race Approval can be given. Each is the subject of a national or international rule designed to ensure the safety of drivers, officials and the public.
'The RYA has a responsibility to ensure that all controls, safety measures and permissions are in place to a level appropriate to the demands of an ultra-marathon offshore event. The outstanding elements include the following:
1. Formal National Authority, Coastguard, Port Authority and / or Government permissions from every area to be raced in
2. List of financial implications to Competitors in each country visited as per UIM Rule 1200.9
3. Marina confirmations from each port of call
4. Evidence that the proposed Tracking System has been tested; with written confirmation from the supplier that the system is appropriate for use in this event
5. Settlement of insurance fees
6. Final Environmental and Risk Assessments for the whole event
'We have had the full assurance of the Venture Cup Organisers that every outstanding piece of documentation will be submitted by the final approval deadline of Tuesday 6th May 2014. This is a unique event, and as such has enjoyed a greater than usual degree of flexibility in its preparation. However, the fundamental principles of safe and professional race management do not change and the relevant rules will be therefore be applied fully, and objectively.'
A further announcement will be made on 07 May following the final Race Approvals Committee decision.
Meanwhile, make sure 07 June is in your diaries to come along and to see the teams off in style at St Katherine’s Dock in London.
