The UIM World OSY400 Powerboat Championships are set to take place 4-5 August in Kriebstein, Germany and 20 year old Luke Hugman of Lowestoft will be travelling there in search of a gold medal.

The OSY400 Class is part of the Hydroplane family in which the racer lies or kneels down; face first, as the boat skims across the water with competitors faces just centimetres above the surface of the water at around 60-70mph.

Racers can start as young as 14 and the class is very popular not only in the UK but has a huge international following.

2011 RYA British OSY400 Champion and Sprint Champion Luke has been racing for around nine years now and moved into the OSY400 class two years ago. A formidable competitor on the water he currently leads the 2012 British Championship however he’ll have his work cut out for him at the World championships as he competes in his first international race and first World championship.

Supported by his father Matthew and Mark Speller who was team mechanic for Britain’s most successful OSY400 Driver (brother) Craig Speller who has won the World Title four times means Luke is relishing in the thought of competing for the World Title.

'There will be some strong competition in Kriebstein but I’m going with every intention of pushing at chance for the gold medal. We had a few technical difficulties in the last round of the National championships but we’ve sorted them out now and we’re focussed on the task ahead,' commented the youngster

'Racing against competitors from other countries will push any racer to try harder. You get used to racing against the same people and their styles of racing in your own country so it will be a great buzz racing people I’ve never raced against.

'I have to thank my Dad and Mark for their support as it will be a real team effort as you can’t win a race without your support team and I’d also like to thank TopCat Racing and Val Cole my sponsors for their continuing support.'

The competition will include two days of racing in which he will compete over four heats of racing for which the top three results will count towards the World Championship.

RYA Powerboat Racing Officer Nikki Drummond had this to say on Luke’s World Championship campaign: 'Luke had a fantastic year in 2011 winning both British titles and has been pushing really hard this year.

'Everybody in the sport is behind him 100% in his World Championship Campaign and we know him and the team will do us and the sport proud.'
