The Great Southern Route

'Great Southern Route the Superyacht Cruising Guide 2008'    Ocean Media
The 'GSR' as its known, is designed as a vital reference guide for large motor- and sailing yachts which intend to cruise 'down under.' It will guide vessels every step of the way from the Suez Canal in the west, crossing the Indian Ocean and Asia to our great southern land of Australia, across the Tasman to the natural wonders of New Zealand and then on to the island-dotted South Pacific, before reaching the Panama Canal in the east.

Some two years in the making, OCEAN Media officially launched The Great Southern Route at the 2007 Monaco Yacht Show in September.

The great canals are the two gateways of The Great Southern Route and we have included extensive details on some 63 'stepping stone' destinations along the way, so that undertaking such a voyage is no more than a series of steps – destination to destination.

With over 6000 superyachts cruising globally and the vast majority plying the familiar waters of the Mediterranean and Caribbean, this guide will help them see the world from an entirely different perspective and encourage greater visitation of our part of the world.

The Great Southern Route has come about as a direct response to enquiries from many owners and captains of large yachts.

'We would love to visit Australia and the corals of the Great Barrier Reef!' they say.

'I hear that the Sydney Harbour New Year’s Eve fireworks are the best in the world!'

'Is it true that if every day you were to visit a new island in the Asian archipelagos it would take the rest of your life?'

'I’ve heard that New Zealand has more pleasure boats per head than anywhere in the world, I’d like to see that!'

'Oh, the romance of the South Seas, how I’d love to cruise around the Tahitian or Fiji Islands!' And it goes on and on...

In recent years there has been great interest by European and North American-based Superyachts in voyaging further afield, south of the Equator, with a tenfold increase in superyachts visiting Australia alone. And this is experienced right across right the Pacific and Asia.

As superyachts have become ever larger and more capable of long ocean passages, so too has there been a demonstrated interest in exploring the Southern Hemisphere.

Such a voyage is not just for large yachts with the range capable of ocean passages on their own hull. There are numerous yacht carriers spanning the Pacific and opening up routes across the Indian Ocean from Europe, bringing even the furthest and most exotic

Every great journey commences with but a single step.
