With Noel Griffin’s ‘Blazen’ thundering ahead, skiers Chris Stout and Grant Turner have stormed home to claim the 2009 Barrie Beehag Water Ski Race staged by the Moama Water Sports Club.
Griffin and observer Bernard Simpson had their boat running superbly as they took their skiers to a new race record of 23:16.
‘Fastcash’, Greg Gunther at the wheel, Graeme Watts observing, towed Michael Gunther and Christopher Taylor into second place with Tim Pickford’s ‘Sapphire Racing’ third boat home, Andrew Glover observing for Jamie Oliver and Aaron McQualter.
'Blazen’ was not the only boat to claim a new race record.
In fact, Julie Golledge, of the Moama Water Sports Club, tells us that nine race record were broken on the day.
'In the 6.0-litre class alone, the top four finishers smashed the old race record,' Julie said.
Dean Johns at the wheel of ‘Sportspage’, with Aaron Martin observing for James Buser and Steven Berry, was another record breaker setting a new mark in 8.0-litre of 24:40.
All up, 132 boats and crews fronted the starter, with spectator numbers well up on last year; more than 1000 people were at the Deep Creek Marina to see the boats off (and home), with hundreds more watching the race from the river banks between the marina and Torrumbarry Weir.

The event was incident free with no injuries reported.
Sadly, Mark Cranny’s very quick boat ‘Hellrazor’ sustained engine problems on the first leg and had to withdraw.
A win would have given the crew an unprecedented four in a row.
