Lasers- the 2010 South Pacific Masters titles were sailed from Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron 16-19th July

There are almost 200,000 Lasers world wide, with its enormous popularity and huge fleets have come a whole range of divisions and within them, age ranges.

Once Laser sailors reach some mature years they can compete in the Master classes. Within Masters ranks there are Apprentices (35-44), Masters (45-54), Grand Masters (55-64), Great Grand Masters (65+).

So the battle of the Zimmer frames continued on Morton Bay. As usual the Queensland weather was good for arthritis, 22 degrees and blues skies each day.

There were two races on Friday; the first was sailed in a soft five-eight knots breeze, the second race lifted to 12-15 knots suiting the heavier, heavy weather sailors.

Saturday and Sunday were soft again with two races each day and Monday was glassed out.

Apprentice Sean Atherton-Feeney from Middle Harbour in Sydney won the South Pacific Laser Masters titles with a very consistent display across the six race series, dropping a fifth place, with a final score 11 - 1,1,4,3,2 in the forty boat fleet. In the light conditions getting good starts was often difficult, but Feeney managed to climb through the fleet.

Second in the series, and leading Master sailor, Brad Taylor was consistent - 13 2, 2,2,2,4.

Leading Grand Master was Rob Lowndes, who was fifth overall.

Bob Blakey, won the Great Grand Masters title, placing a very respectably 14th.

In the Laser Radial series, Master sailor Adam French, the 2000 World Champion, won from Womens Master champion Vanessa Dudley, with Apprentice Scot Leith third.

The leading Grand Master/Womens sailor Lyndall Patterson was seventh overall and the first place Great Grand Master Lew Verdon was ninth. There were 35 entrants in the Laser Radial division.

Suellen Hurling from RQYS commented ‘The squadron has many talented masters’ sailors including former world champions Christine Bridge, Lyndall Patterson, Kerry Waraker, Brad Taylor and Greg Adams - the standard is extremely high.

‘It's exciting that the Laser Masters are having their own separate Australian championship and the Squadron looks forward to hosting the second event in 2012.’

Talking about the Australian Master titles, Michael Mills from Port Stephens was happy to expand. ‘The first free-standing Australian Laser Master Championships will be sailed at Port Stephens, north of Sydney in February 2011 – it’s from the 11th to the 14th of February; that’s Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

'It will be sailed on Port Stephens at the Port Stephens Sailing and Aquatic Club on the beautiful waters of Salamander Bay.

'For the 2011 Master Nationals, we’re expecting overseas competitors. There’s one guy coming from the UK already and we expect quite a number of New Zealanders to come over.

‘We are expecting around 180 to 200 competitors. This will be the largest Masters event in Australia since the Terrigal World Championship, and 12 months after that we will be having the Masters Worlds in Fremantle in 2012. So it is a good time for Masters to start their training period and to gear up for the upcoming Worlds.'
