Safety call in Tweed bream tournament

Boaters on the Tweed River for the Australian Bream Tournament this weekend (26 and 27 July) are reminded to observe maritime regulations and avoid blocking navigation channels, NSW Maritime North Coast Regional Manager Jim Green said.

Mr Green said the popular fishing tournament attracted many spectators, as well as about 150 competing vessels to the Tweed River.

'It is quite a popular weekend on the water,' Mr Green said.

'NSW Maritime will have a presence with Boating Officers patrolling the area on both days of the competition.'

'Boaters need to be aware that the Tweed River is quite narrow in places.'

Mr Green said there were bottlenecks particularly at Terranora Creek, near the confluence of the Tweed where the channel was only about 30m wide and near Jack Evans Boat Harbour.

'It is important not to obstruct channels and impede navigation for other users of the waterway, regardless of how good the fish are biting there,' Mr Green said.

'It is also important for skippers to remember that you are technically ‘under way’ when you are not anchored and drifting for fish.

'So even while drifting, skippers remain responsible to observe marine regulations and safety requirement such as ensuring correct navigation lights are displayed when boating at night.

'Skippers must also travel at a safe speed and keep a proper lookout at all times,' Mr Green said.
