Roads and Maritime Services to replace markers on Brisbane Water

Work has been started by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to replace more than 20 navigation markers on Brisbane Water.

RMS Hawkesbury/Broken Bay Acting Regional Manager Hendrik Clasie said Brisbane Water was a unique waterway with a large number - more than 180 – of navigation markers needed to mark the safest course for boaters.

'Just like signs on our roads, navigation markers are essential for boating safety,' Mr Clasie said.

'Brisbane Water is a large estuary, which is also quite shallow, and fringed on all sides by residential properties, many with direct water access.

'There are also a lot of man-made islands and tributaries as well as oyster leases – all of which need to be marked.'

Mr Clasie said many of the markers up for replacement were more than 20 years old and were a combination of floating markers and timber posts.

'Several of the buoys will be upgraded from small to larger buoys for better visibility, but most will be direct replacements of red and green port and starboard markers or yellow and black cardinal marks,' Mr Clasie said.

Work to replace the navigation markers is expected to be completed by the end of June, weather permitting.
