Not so very long ago, anyone aspiring to ownership of a ‘big’ boat had little choice other than a flybridge-style vessel.
The Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht looks very much at home in its natural habitat.
I’m not knocking the flying bridge concept, far from it, I’m quite partial towards standing high at the helm and looking like a skipper.
However, for those with absolutely no interest in hanging wide chasing big fish, the flying bridge is not really necessary.
Builders in the UK, such as Sunseeker and Princess, together Chris-Craft and Sea Ray, among others in the US, recognised this and were among the leaders to offer boat buyers ‘big’ boats without the flying bridge.
This led to the creation, if you will, of the sport boat or sport yacht genre’ and Australia’s leading luxury builders such as Maritimo and Riviera were quick to follow suit, offering consumers stylish sport boat designs.
Both companies have enjoyed considerable success, Maritimo with its Cabriolet range and Riviera with the range it terms Sport Yachts.
Despite the sales success of the sport boat design, I’m not suggesting the flying bridge is losing popularity; however, some brokers have pointed out that many prospective buyers in retirement mode who qualify as ‘senior citizens’ have no interest in negotiating ladders and stairways up and down to a flying bridge.
They find having entertaining and socialising with guests a far easier task when all are on one level.
Two very stylish and efficient vessels lead the charge into the sport boat market for Riviera in the forms of the 5000 Sport Yacht and the 5800 Sport Yacht.

Riviera CEO John Anderson credits the release of these two delightful craft as being a spearhead of the company’s recent sales success, with 116 vessels sold worldwide in the 2010 calendar year.
'The 5000 and 5800 Sport Yachts have been extremely well received, with sales of 27 and 16 respectively since their introduction earlier last year,' he said.
'Several models have also been snapped up on the North American market and we will be displaying both models at the 2011 Miami International Yacht and Brokerage Show
'Our team will be on hand at Miami to discuss our next series pf innovative models bound the United States over the next 12 months,' he added.
The spacious saloon aboard the Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht personifies luxury.
The Riviera 5000 Sport Yachts is in many ways a larger (and even more luxurious) version of the award-winning Riviera 4700, named Australia’s Boat of the Year in 2007.
It differs markedly from the 4700 in that it boasts Cummins Marine Diesels with Zeus drive units with counter-rotating propellers and underwater exhausts as opposed to the standard shaft drive of the 4700.
With Joystick control, handling this boat is a sheer delight, whether it’s sideways tracking, spinning on a pin and achieving accurate control of speed.
Two accommodation floor plans are offered, either three cabins with two bathrooms or two cabins, two bathrooms with the addition of an additional lounge area.
Other accommodation options can be achieved by specifying double or single berth fittings.
Expansive panoramic windows and an electric sunroof allow those on boars to enjoy the day out whatever the weather.

The Riviera 5800 Sport Yacht is rated by the company as 'a Riviera like no other.’
It takes luxury boating to a new level, the company believes and buyers can specify up to three engines all with Volvo Penta’s revolutionary IPS, a system offering a triple 435hp installation with forward-facing propellers.
Like its smaller ‘cousin’ the 5000, the 5800 offers various floor plan options with a number of ‘striking features’ among them opening port lights allowing natural light and ventilation into various sectors of the vessel.
The master stateroom is certainly fit for a ‘master’ (and his mistress?) with its king-sized double berth, en-suite and walk-in ‘robe.
There’s a VIP guest cabin forward and another starboard twin cabin easily converted to a double when required.
An additional twin cabin on the port side is available, depending on the chosen floor plan.
The main saloon is a work of art; a large U-shaped galley (the forward section serves as a breakfast servery) a convenient dinette, a luxurious lounge area with leather sofas and helm and companions seating forward on the starboard side.
