John and Evelyn Hotchin at Recfish Australia 2008 ‘Volunteer of the Year’ awards.
John Hotchin, VRFish Board Member and Secretary of the Association of Geelong and District Angling Clubs, has been awarded the Recfish Australia 2008 Recfishing ‘Volunteer of the Year’.
At an awards ceremony held in Canberra, Recfish Australia presented national awards for recognising achievements within the recreational fishing sector.
John’s volunteer efforts over the last five years have netted approximately $2 million worth of projects for recreational fishing in Victoria.
These include, installation of webcams, fish cleaning tables, fishing pontoons, access steps, fish aggregation devices and improvements to boat launching facilities.
John also coordinates stocking of fish and children’s fishing clinics, such as the Ron Nelson Fishing Clinic. This year’s event is on October 28 at Seagull Paddock in Geelong.
John is actively involved in many volunteer recreational fishing groups and dedicates countless hours to VRFish and the Association of Geelong and District Angling Clubs.
Chairman Geoff Cramer said 'VRFish is extremely proud of John and his achievements; he is truly dedicated to improving recreational fishing in Victoria and he is deserving of this acknowledgement of his contributions'.
'We are also proud that this award reflects the significant volunteer efforts of all of the members of VRFish and demonstrates that VRFish are leaders in maintaining a culture that encourages volunteer inputs to recreational fishing.'
John was not the only Victorian to be acknowledged at the Recfishing Awards ceremony.
Fisheries Victoria was awarded the ‘best project or initiative encouraging women and/or young people’s participation in fishing’ for its ‘Go Fishing in Victoria Initiative’.
Congratulations to Fisheries Victoria, this is a fantastic program, and VRFish are proud to be associated with this program as well.
