President appeals for Malta P1 Grand Prix

The President of the Malta Powerboat Federation, Teddie Borg, says he will be 'the most disappointed person on the island' if Powerboat P1 doesn’t return in 2010.

Malta, blessed with a immense passion for powerboating, is home to current Powerboat P1 SuperSport Class World Champion, Aaron Ciantar, who was recently rewarded for his outstanding achievements in the sport with a Special Merit Award at the Maltese Olympic Committee Sports Awards.

Borg is now pleading with the key decision makers in Malta to ensure the 2010 Malta Grand Prix of the Sea takes place, if only for the sakes of the thousands Ciantar fans that avidly follow the sport.

'I am desperate to see Powerboat P1 back in Valetta for a seventh consecutive year, not only for myself, but for the thousands of Powerboat P1 fans that love the sport dearly.

'I know from my own personal experience that Malta has been one of the pilots’ favourite race venues and they would be extremely upset too.'

Borg deserves huge credit for championing powerboating in his homeland. He founded the Malta Powerboat School to nuture the country's top junior talent that harbour similar desires to the Ciantars and become world champions of the future.

'We may never see another Aaron or Audrien Ciantar. I truly believe that losing the Powerboat P1 Grand Prix of the Sea in 2010 will cause this much negativity.'

Another crucial reason at the forefront of Borg's thinking is October's UIM General Assembly in Valletta. It is the very first time in Malta's short powerboating history that the sport's key decision makers will be visiting the island. Without the presence of Powerboat P1, Borg believes this will be a big blow for the Malta Powerboat Federation.

'I just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope sooner rather than later, sense will prevail,' said Borg.
