Spirit of Belgium team principal and throttleman, Patrick Huybreghts, proudly announced plans for an all-new custom-built hull for the 2010 Powerboat P1 SuperSport Class World Championship earlier this week.

Like in 2009, the craft will be manufactured by Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats with Mastry Engine Center powering the team. Huybreghts has decided to stick with last year’s tried and tested formula, hoping to build on the rookie team’s fourth position overall.

Huybreghts said: “Considering next year’s rule changes, I have chosen to commission a completely new race-boat to give the team the best possible chance of success.

“Our 2009 results has given me a thirst for more, both as a competitor and a business person, so my goal is to maximise those opportunities, and ensure the financial efforts are rewarded with positive race results.”

Fondly looking back on an “amazing” first term, Huybreghts pinpointed the team’s Grand Prix of the Sea best finish, third-position overall, in Sweden as the “absolute highlight.”

“Our fantastic weekend in Gothenburg, coupled with Powerboat P1’s encouraging plans to develop the series into a serious world class event, especially in the face of financial world turmoil, were chief reasons for our ongoing support of the championship,” said the Belgian pilot.

Despite facing stiff competition from some of the world’s top boat builders, Huybreghts' growing trust with Nor-Tech was the primary reason for choosing the Fort Myers-based manufacturers to supply the Spirit of Belgium team with its championship boat for next year.

Huybreghts argued: “Nor-Tech comes with years of experience in competitive powerboat racing and I feel we have an excellent chance to compete for the title next year with them on board.”

Changes are afoot with new team personnel likely to be announced in the New Year.
