Penzance Powerboat Grand Prix – Great opportunity for young people

The Penzance Grand Prix of the Sea is a great opportunity for young people to get involved with one of Cornwall’s biggest summer events, according to Head of Community for Penwith Community Development Trust, Ms. Bernie Hall.

The weekend entertainment package that is powering into west Cornwall on May 22 will feature teams from the U.K’s most exciting new motorsport, the Powerboat P1 SuperStock Championship, competing at the season-opening race, as well as a two-day music festival, SuperStock Rocks, showcasing twelve of the county’s best unsigned acts.

Ms Hall believes that this huge event is just what the town needs and will attract large numbers of young people to the Western Promenade during the weekend. She said: 'These events are really important for our communities because the majority of fun summertime activities and festivals for young people require travelling to and from the location and can often incur a large cost.

'So many exciting events take place out of the county and are normally inaccessible. The Penzance Grand Prix of the Sea will give an opportunity for people of all ages to get involved. The powerboat race is a free event and it can be as inclusive as possible.'

Fighting to provide a better range of quality choices and services for young people in Penwith, Ms Hall also cites a lack of youth provision and facilities for extra-curricular activities, as being key factors in depriving young people in Penzance of the same opportunities as others in Cornwall. Hall believes SuperStock Rocks will go a long way to raising awareness of the outstanding local young talent in the region.

'There is a lot of young talent in Cornwall. SuperStock Rocks will give bands the opportunity to promote themselves on the biggest stage possible. It will also attract the right people to see those groups with lots of potential and the ability to pursue a future career in music.'

At the forefront of those promoting aspiring musicians in Penzance, Mike Adams, owner of popular local music venue, The Zero Lounge, and one of the brains behind SuperStock Rocks, adds further weight to Ms Hall’s case, arguing that the two-day music festival will give them the belief to go in search of bigger and better stages to display their talents. He said: 'Since The Zero Lounge opened 18 months ago we have been privileged to work with some amazing artists. We hold live music and open mic nights every week.'

'When the opportunity arose to help organise a first class event such as SuperStock Rocks and to promote some extremely talented musicians, we all felt it was too good to miss out on.'

'We continually see new musicians growing in confidence by playing in front of larger audiences and interacting with them and we hope that Superstock Rocks will give them the impetus to recognise their abilities and chase their dreams.'
