P1 AquaX Championship - Marmon dominates

'P1 AquaX championship 2012'    Powerboat P1
In the P1 AquaX Championship, Russell Marmon of Christchurch is back to dominating with two emphatic victories this weekend in Easterbourne, extending his lead in the 300 Class title race. Yesterday, the 49-year old came from behind to win, but today he was first into Mark One and never looked back as he revelled in the choppy waters of the English Channel.

'I went to look at the conditions before today’s race and it was really calm, but then just before the start the wind increased and the sea suddenly got really rough,' Marmon said. 'Today everyone seemed tired from yesterday’s race but I’ve learnt it’s important to pace yourself over the weekend and that is where my experience comes into play.'

Nearest rivals Jim Goodchild (Hemel Hempstead) and Tim Batte (Hinckley) shared the honours with Tim finishing second on Saturday but Jim turning the tables today to grab the position behind the runaway Marmon. Kevin Ashley (West London) was right up with the front runners in both races and came away with two fourth place finishes.

Dave Huddleston (Milton Keynes) was also back to his best winning both 250 Class encounters on his Kawasaki and mixing it in the overall positions with the more powerful 300hp skis. 'The start was a complete nightmare with the chop and trying to keep the ski level was hard, in fact it was pretty rough all the way through the race. I got up into fourth, third and then second at one point so it was good to be in amongst the more powerful guys.'

Mat Shipley (Seaford) used his local knowledge to score a brace of second places to keep the pressure on Huddleston at the top of the points table. Newcomer Mark Shaw (Margate) also enjoyed a competitive outing on his Yamaha FZS along with local Sea-Doo rider Rob Sired (Littlehampton) and the pair are now level on points in the 250 Class table.

Khris Leach (Maidstone) closed in on 200 Class leader Duncan Johnstone (Fareham) by outscoring the reigning champion in both Eastbourne races. Leach won his second AquaX race today to score maximum points following second place yesterday on his new Kawasaki Ultra 160, whilst Johnstone fell off his trusty Yamaha in Saturday’s race but recovered to finish third and backed that up with second place today.

'I made a really good start but there was spray everywhere and it was super rough. Anya (Colley) caught me and got away and to be honest I never would have caught her', commented Khris. 'When I saw her stop I slowed to see if she was OK, but also a little excited to take the lead. I kept on it because I thought Duncan would have been right on my tail. I cannot believe I bought my new ski on Wednesday, tested it on Friday and raced it on Saturday and Sunday and won!'

Anya Colley (Long Eaton) won the 200 Class race yesterday to celebrate joining a new all girl team backed by JTW Joinery, but retired from the lead in today’s race with a broken ski. 'I was pushing 110 percent all of that race, as you have to with these skis but I am gutted it broke down as I was battling with Khris and had managed to get a lead on both him and Duncan. Then two laps before the end the ski just stopped, it went off a wave and stalled and just wouldn’t start again. It’s a shame but hopefully we’ll have it fixed for next time.'

Paul Rivett (Banstead) is closing in on Sea-Doo Challenge leader Steve Robinson (Hull) after narrowly beating the East Yorks rider in today’s thrilling race. 'It was my best race so far as with a lap to go Steve was right on my shoulder so I had to go as hard as I dared on the last lap to win', the reigning Clio Cup champion said. Rivett also won yesterday’s encounter to reduce the gap at the top of the standings to just nine points.
