Welcome to Sail-World Canada
Oman Teams win in Oman!
The Extreme Sailing Series opening Act of got underway in Oman earlier this week. To everyone's surprise, local favorites Oman Air took first place in the series, followed by the other local team The Wave–Muscat. Overall favorite French team of Groupe Edmond de Rothschild was relegated to the last podium place. Fabulous action on the water in close quarters in high performance 40-foot catamaran racing; doesn't get any better! Next stop is China; some of you will likely remember the strong winds in Qingdao that resulted in capsize featured on international news channels.
The big right hand turn South started as a drag race for the entire Volvo Ocean Race fleet; with PUMA catching up on the outside of the turn, it was almost a new start for the skippers. After a few days of phenomenal racing where 24-hour speed records were challenged, the fleet is now facing slower conditions as they negotiate the lighter conditions prevailing around the Solomon Islands. Groupama are in front leading PUMA and Abu Dhabi on an easterly course, while Telefonica has opted for a short cut through the islands with Camper and Sanya in pursuit. The coming week should be interesting to watch!
Everyone is now safely in the Southern Atlantic in the Global Ocean Race. The Cessna Citation co-skippers are now resting in Punta del Este having completed the leg on Wednesday; Financial Crisis and Phesheya-Racing should be joining them later this week.
In Qingdao, the Clipper Round the World Race crews are set for their departure towards Oakland, California tomorrow. The Clipper Race will be hosted as part of the impressive Strictly Sail Boat Show in Oakland waterfront next month, following the 5700 miles Pacific crossing.
The popular Heineken Regatta is currently on in St. Marteen; keep an eye for our on-site reports.
Pirate lovers will not want to miss the new Canadian documentary relating the history of pirates and privateers in Atlantic Canada. World broadcast premiere is on CBC Television's Land & Sea; Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 12 Noon.
All the best!
