Powerboat P1 crews set new speed records.

A posse of Powerboat P1 racers moved from offshore racing to record breaking last week as they established new benchmarks in the Coniston Speed Week . New speed records were set for both the Evolution class and SuperSport class by the #66 Cranfields Wine Searex Racing and #07 Microlink PC VoomVoom.com crews.

Coniston – the third-largest body of water in the UK’s Lake District – is synonymous with speed, and the Coniston Speed Week has quickly become a popular haunt for powerboat racers eager to set new straightline benchmarks.

#66 Cranefields Wine throttleman and team boss Grieve and regular pilot Gino Passchier claimed the Evolution National and World speed records in his Mercury V8-powered Searex 40 hull with an average speed of 121.48 mph, before bettering it on his second run with a higher speed of 122.21mph. 'It was quite difficult on that very flat water,' Grieve said. 'For an offshore boat you need air under the boat and a little choppy water.'

#07 Microlink PC VoomVoom.com throttleman and team boss Vee Ganjavian and pilot Gareth Williams set a new SuperSport National and World benchmark of 86.97mph in their Yanmar diesel-powered Hustler hull, and also then went on to better it on their second run with a faster speed of 89.69mph. Ganjavian also got a taste of 100mph+ Evolution-class speeds in the #66 Cranefields Wine boat.

'I love Coniston and all it stands for,' Ganjavian said. 'I cannot wait to come back with bigger and faster boats! I have a fantastic team behind me, and without them none of this would have been possible! I was warded the K7 Gold Star, which I shall wear with honour. All and all, the best four days of 2008 season for me. Also a big thanks to Michael Roberts of Powerboat P1’s TCC for attending and making sure everything was in order.'

The #77 Lucas Oil Evolution class team is swapping to an Outerlimits hull and Chief Engines for 2009The #77 Lucas Oil Evolution-class Powerboat P1 team have announced that they will be altering their line-up for 2009. The US-based outfit will change to an Outerlimits hull and power from the Miami-based Chief Engines for next year.

American pilot Joe Sgro – who raced alongside #77 Lucas Oil team boss Nigel Hook in an Outerlimits hull in the 2007 Powerboat P1 championship – will once again join Hook in the cockpit. Sgro raced with the Italian OSG Racing-run #88 Kiton Outerlimits Evolution team this year as pilot.

The announcement was made at this week’s SBI/APBA World Championships in Key West, in which the #77 Lucas Oil team is competing. 'After eight years of successfully representing Lucas Oil we’re excited to broaden our footprint in the marine marketplace and continue to extend our presence worldwide,' Hook said

'Now’s the time! This 43 Outerlimits is absolutely the best boat for the European circuit, and to top it all off we have Joe Sgro on the wheel. We are by far the most experienced v-hull racers in the world and we plan to pilot this boat to victory.'

Outerlimits president Mike Fiore also described his pleasure at the new tie-up with the #77 Lucas Oil team and Chief Engines. 'It makes perfect sense to pull together the premium American brands of Chief Engines and Whipple Superchargers, which are the perfect combination to take on the tough competition in Europe,' he said.

'We see an opportunity to help Lucas Oil in the marine industry through our racing, Poker Runs, and trade shows. Yesterday was certainly a great start as the team dials in and prepares this brand new boat for next years Powerboat P1 race season.'
