New fishing cards help kids get the picture
'Go Fishing - a Victorian Government initiative www.dpi.vic.gov.au/gofishing'
Fisheries Victoria has released a great free product designed specifically for budding young anglers. It follows on from other popular Go Fishing in Victoria initiative products such as the Family Fishing Guide and 2008 calendar.

Eight illustrated ‘Let’s Go Fishing’ cards cover a range of species popular amongst recreational fishers. Featured freshwater fish are the Murray cod, golden perch, rainbow trout and redfin while separate cards have been produced for the marine and estuarine species flathead, King George whiting, bream and snapper.

The cards feature bright and colourful cartoon depictions of the eight species which have been purposely drawn for this product.

Each card also has images of the fishing tackle needed to target each species as well as popular baits. The pocket-sized cards also include a description of each species, a list of known hot-spots and handy tips which otherwise take years to learn.

The cards will be of great value to parents who want to get their children involved in a healthy outdoor activity such as fishing but don’t have much knowledge of the sport themselves. A full set of the eight cards is available upon request for a limited time by calling 136 186, contacting the nearest DPI office or sending an email to go.fishing@dpi.vic.gov.au and including a postal address.

Another great way for children and parents to develop their fishing skills, and have a lot of fun in the process, is to attend one of the Family Fishing Festivals that are regularly staged by Fisheries Victoria. Festivals are scheduled for Lillydale Lake on 20 September and Jubilee Lake, Daylesford on 18 October. The festivals are loaded with fishing and other fun activities and should prove to be very popular.
