'Hand made Minnow lures'

Made by hand, painted by you, there is no greater satisfaction than making a lure to catch your own fish! Couple of points to go over first. In this section you will be using sharp objects and pointy thingies........make sure you know how to use them and always, use a holding tool..or cut away from your body. To make your own wooden lure you will need several items.......these are a handsaw, pine timber, paint and a stanley knife.
 | Hand made Minnow lures - Carl Hyland | First you need to trace the outline of your lure onto a piece of timber............
 | Hand made Minnow lures - Carl Hyland | We need to cut out our lure shape, well once that's done we can then shape it a little more. Trim excess wood away from the lure aiming to give us that wedge shape.(Broad across the back and a narrow belly...triangle) To do this, a sharp knife or even a sander can be implemented!
 | Hand made Minnow lures - Carl Hyland | Once that's done, sand the final shape, here's where you determine what the finish will be like on your lure, so the more effort put in here, the better the results.. | Hand made Minnow lures - Carl Hyland | Now the secret squirrel stuff..........here you need to drill 3 holes in your lure, being careful not to go all the way through. These are the holes that will hold the wires for hanging your hooks off. This is but one way to mount the wires and it is still used by modern lure factories today..Rapala, Nilsmaster etc. Anyway, drill those holes, as deep as you can get them Once you have done that(be prepared to break drill bits by the way) ...............we then need to make the wire mounts. You can buy these from lure manufacturing companies, but I prefer to make my own. You will need to twist your own wires and the best wire is Mig either stainless or soft drawn galvanized. For the purposes of this demo, I am using soft copper. Dia is 0.08mm (I think). Either way, make sure your wire diameter is a snug fit in the holes you drilled into your lures. This is the 3 stage process to get your twisted mounts. Place wire in vice or pliers and place a nail through the loop, and twist away. This gives you a 'thread'. Here are the wires about to be mounted in the lure.................. Liberally coat wires with two pack epoxy........in this case, Araldite. Its got to be good glue. In testing my lures, they can stand a pull force of 35kg if using this method. Nothing worse than having a big fish get way with your prized possession or you’re left with a lure with no hook Finally, we allow glue to dry with mounts in place and there you have it, a near finished 'blank' ready for the next stage.........in this case, placing bibs and painting. This is where we apply undercoats, try different patterns and scales etc. Then we place the bibs and test the lure. There is nothing like manufacturing your own lures, cedar(old wardrobes, window sills) etc are great sources of timber, plus not only are you recycling, you a getting into a great hobby and you will save money, and we all want to do that! You will be amazed at the reaction amongst other anglers when they look upon your ‘creations’ so what are you waiting for?
