NZL Sailing Team: Sara Winther reflects on 2010's racing and results

New Zealand's top ranked Laser Radial sailor reports on her 2010 season:

My 2010 Racing season has reached the end. It has been a year of highs and lows, with some of my best and worst results.

The definite high for the year was my bronze medal at the Skandia Sail for Gold event. It was such a confidence boost achieving this result against all the worlds best at the Olympic venue. It was especially nice being on the podium with Marit and Sari (NED & FIN) as we had done a lot of training together this year, and shows it paid off.

I also had a lot of fun in Weymouth, being with the whole NZL Sailing Team was awesome and in the future I am going to make sure I am enjoying the events, rather than trying to be too serious and stress when things may not go quite to plan. As you all may know, lots of things during sailing events do not go to plan!

The other highlight of my year was my 5th place at the French World Cup, this regatta was in mainly light conditions, compared to Sail for Gold, so I am happy with my speed in a range of conditions.

All in all it has been a good year. I can definitely say I have improved from last year and am starting to see some reward from all the training on and off the water. Looking forward to 2012, there is still a lot of work to done in the next 14 months.. Everyone is the fleet will improve

So I will need to do it better!

So where to from now. I am planning a few weeks off from sailing! I am getting back into the cycling, add to my base fitness for next year. My other main goal is to work on funding and sponsorship funds to help support me next year. I have a big year planned in 2011 and funding is crucial to my campaign

In November I head to Perth to compete in the Perth test event. All the Olympic class world championships are being held in Fremantle in Dec 2011, so plenty of good sailors are heading there this November to do the event and train. It’s a good opportunity to get some hours under my belt in the ‘Fremantle Doctor' and not have to travel to Europe! I will also compete at Sail Melbourne in December, which is also the first World Cup of the new season.

Right well that’s all from me... I would just like to thank everyone for your awesome support over the year. I could not have done it without you all. I hope I can make next year event better!

Cheers
