The Gold Coast Marine Industry Association undertook to change its name at a recent AGM and will now be known as Marine Gold Coast.

Marine Gold Coast president, Charles Dickson, said the new name reflected the association’s recent alignment with Marine Queensland, which earlier this year changed its name from the Boating Industry Association of Queensland, as well as the strategic industry branding currently being promoted by the Gold Coast City Council’s Department of Economic Development.

'The marine industry is now the Gold Coast’s third largest sector, behind only tourism and property development,' Mr Dickson explained.

'It boasts more than 400 companies employing in excess of 4000 people and generates in the region of $250 million in exports each year.

'All sectors of the Gold Coast’s marine industry are facing a range of significant issues which are impacting on their future profitability.

'The aim of Marine Gold Coast is to promote the industry’s strength and to encourage a unified industry approach through which we can communicate our concerns and seek cooperation from all levels of government,' he added.

Office bearers elected at the AGM comprise Charles Dickson (Market Focus), president, John Hogan (Superior Jetties), vice president and Michael Hinde (Marine Queensland), treasurer.

Mr Dickson said the association was backed up by a committee comprising a broad cross section of the local marine industry, including manufacturing, marina operation, tourism charters, sales and marketing.
