Earthrace heads for Spain

'Earthrace in the Med - - 2008 Round the World U.I.M. record attempt'    TracPlus
The 78 foot (24 metre) bio-diesel fuelled wave piercing trimaran Earthrace entered the Mediterrean Ocean at 0700GMT today and is currently speeding across a flat calm sea heading for Spain.

Earthrace started her attempt to set a new world record for a powerboat to circle the globe from Vulkan Shipyard, Sagunto, Spain on Sunday 27 April 2008, 14.35 local time/13.35 GMT.

The current record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe is currently 74 days 20 hours 58 minutes 30 seconds*. This record was set by UK boat ‘Cable & Wireless Adventurer’ in 1998.

In order to break the record, Earthrace has to return before Saturday 12 July, 14.28 local Spanish time/13.28 GMT.

It is Day 58 and Earthrace is just 1,450 nautical miles from Sagunto Spain, and the excitment is palpable as the Earthrace crew know they are just a few days away from a new world record.

As a Military vessel was passing through, for security reasons, other vessels were unable to travel along the canal at night, so the boat docked half way to Port Said in Ismailia, where the Canal authorirties had prepared a feast for the Earthrace team.

She set off again at first light and Earthrace has now travelled 21,890 nautical miles and she is 3,426 miles ahead of the record. She is expected back in Sagunto around 10am on Saturday.June 28th 2008
