Current Australasian title holder of the ‘E.C. Griffith Cup’ Brett Niddrie has confirmed his entry to this year’s event. Niddrie last year piloted the Grand Prix Hydroplane ‘Warlord’ to a decisive win on Lake Mulwala in the process retaining the most coveted power boating for Australia. He also won the event back in 1999 and at that time become the youngest ever winner in the Cup’s history.

The ‘E.C Griffith Cup’ sponsored this year by ClubMulwala, is the southern hemisphere’s oldest and most contested title fought between Australia and New Zealand. The winning nation gets to host the following year’s event which draws spectators in their thousands, from both countries to see the world’s fastest power boats compete side by side at speeds over 270kph.

This year Niddrie in the immaculate and beautiful looking hydro will now not only be up against three Kiwi teams all determined to take the title back to ‘the land of the long white cloud’ but have fresh Australian competition in the form of the brand new long awaited GP Hydro from the Harrison Motoring Group. Pilot Grant Harrison had a serious accident which destroyed their previous craft and many thought would be an end to their famous racing career.

Harrison previously had won back to back EC Griffith Cups and the Grand World Hydroplane Championship in 2004 before dropping away from the racing scene until now, where Harrison and the GP1 team hope to be able to help Australia keep the Australasian Championship on home waters.

'We are keen to run the new GP in the Griffith Cup' said Harrison ' in fact in our first ever test outing two weeks ago we here very pleased with the hulls performance and as such hope to be able to put up a respectable show and help the Aussies entered put up a fight against the mighty Kiwi teams'. When pushed to see if they had any thought of making a miracle comeback to the winners circle Grant commented that he was just pleased to be back racing again. 'It might look easy to do but we are under no false pretences that that the teams to beat are the Kiwis and the Aussie boat Warlord. Those Kiwi drivers are full on and last year’s winner Brett has the best boat and is no slouch. We will be happy to just make the final'.

Over 20 race teams have entered for the 95th running of the ‘Cup’ which is being held as part of Lake Mulwala Power commencing Friday 28th November till the Sunday.

Also in attendance will be Champion USA pilot Elizabeth Wolfe who will piloting one of the smaller craft in the Oz Lite Hydroplane class. Lake Mulwala Power has support class racing, juniors also take the stage in the Formula Future class for boys and girls aged 10-14 years of age making for a supercharged action day.

On the shore of the beautiful green lawns will be trade displays, market stalls for the family, picnic areas and more. For further information contact the Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism office.
