Class 1 World Powerboat Championship - BMW Norwegian Grand Prix.

Fazza 3’s Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi once again demonstrated that they will be the team to beat ahead of this weekend’s two-race BMW Norwegian Grand Prix, after setting the pace in today’s first official practice session.

The defending World Champions shaved five seconds off their first flying lap, setting their best time on their third and final run of the session, posting 3mins 25.78secs around the 6.12Nm circuit, over seven seconds faster than their nearest challenger, and will now look to extend their run of five straight wins in qualifying, in tomorrow’s Edox Pole Position.

The most impressive showing of this afternoon’s session belonged to Italians Giovanni Carpitella and Giorgio Manuzzi in Spirit of Dubai - the newest design to come out of the Victory workshops - and being run competitively for the first time. Racing together for only the second time, their time of 3mins 32.87secs put them second quickest, to edge out Fazza 1’s Abdullah Al Mehairbi and Mohammed Al Marri by two seconds.

Zabo Racing’s Christian Zaborowski and Paul Gaiser, the second of three new pairings making their season-debuts this weekend, used the session to shakedown Relekta, with team Principal Jan Zaborowski pleased with the way the session unfolded.

But there was frustration for the all-Norwegian pairing of Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg in Welmax, who failed to post a time after a broken driveshaft ended their session, and Primatist’s Guido Cappellini and Nicola Giorgi who failed to make it out onto the water.
