After a stunning podium result at the opening round of the UIM F1 World Championship, Bob and David Trask went into the second round of the 2008 series with justified optimism.

Following the opening round at Qatar, the back room engineers at Trask Brothers Racing in Brisbane had made significant advances on the Mercury race engines. Season 2008 was to be all about more speed with greater reliability in the charge to be the world Formula 1 champion.
At the GP of Portugal, staged at the scenic seaside town of Portimao, Dave Trask stamped his authority from the outset during practice. In the first qualifying session Dave was in second place and ultimately qualified for the top six shoot out. Bob Trask qualified in 14th place in the field of 22 starters.
The TBR campaign took a turn for the worse when the pit crew discovered hull damage to Dave’s GTR hull. While the problem could be rectified overnight, Dave Trask had no option in the shoot out but to cruise around the course to avoid further damage.
Race dawned sunny and calm. With the Trask Development Corporation boats lined up in sixth and fourteenth place, the team were still confident of performing well.
David Trask blasted off the start dock like a man entirely focussed on being at the front of the pack. Bob Trask got away to a bad start with his boat being bashed and knocked in the pack.
Out front though, David Trask in the #4 TDC boat was in third place from the commencement of the first lap. For the ensuing 24 laps, David Trask was all over the back of American Jay Price trying to find a way past.
'I just drove as hard as I could putting as much pressure on Jay,' David Trask said. 'Every time he looked in his mirrors he saw me and was driving just as hard to hold me out of second place.'
With barely a second between David Trask and Jay Price, (and then another two seconds ahead to the race leader) disaster struck the TDC challenge when Dave Trask experienced a complete engine failure.
'It just let go and we stopped – end of race!'
With the #4 TDC boat on the race line, the disabled yellow flags came out while a dejected David Trask was towed off the course.
When the flag dropped and the GP resumed, it was left to Bob Trask to take up the challenge working his way through the field. At the completion of the mandatory 55 laps, Bob Trask crossed the finish line in ninth position to score his first lot of points in the 2008 UIM F1 World Championship series.
'While I am very happy to have finished amongst the points, we are also disappointed for Dave.' Bob Trask said back in the pits.
'He was right on target for a top three finish at worst, but more than likely better than that. But racing is a tough game and while we are disappointed we have to go back to Brisbane to re-group, learn from the experience and front up in Finland with a package that will do the job.'
At the completion of two rounds, David Trask is in equal fourth position on the Drivers World Championship Points table, Bob Trask is in 15th position.
The next round of the 2008 UIM F1 World Championship is to be contested in Finland on June 8th.
Trask Brothers Racing will be contesting the next round of the Australian F1 Superboat series to be conducted at Toukley NSW on May 25th.
