The far northern coastal region of NSW, where the gorgeous Clarence and Richmond Rivers run into the sea, is appropriately known by locals as ‘Big River Country.’
Maclean NSW, Clarence River Bream country
A score of anglers will be hoping it’s ‘Big Bream Country’ when the 2008 Skeeter Bream Classic gets underway over the weekend of November 7/9.
Sponsored by Skeeter Boats Australia, the Penrith-based distributor of the US-built bass boats, the tournament will be staged on the mighty Clarence River, which experienced anglers claim boasts ‘hundreds of kilometres of fishable waters.’
The picturesque riverside town of Maclean will become ‘bream central’, with tournament briefing scheduled for 8.30pm on the Friday night (Nov 7) at the Maclean Services Club.
Skeeter Boats Australia is not only the major sponsor; the major prize for the winning team will be a Skeeter SX 170 powered by a 115hp Evinrude E-Tec outboard worth $36,000.
Nice work, if you can get it.
Format for the tournament allows any two anglers who have qualified throughout the bream season to compete together as a team. Two sessions will be fished each day, from 0700hrs to 1400hrs.
That’s seven hours each day to catch five bream daily, as solid test of the competitors’ skill and composure to deliver the catch to the weighmaster. Only artificial lures or flies may be used, meaning anglers will need to be ‘on the ball’ and use all their skill and experience.
Competitors will keep fish alive in their bait wells, with all fish weighed at the end of each session in a drive-through weigh station allowing spectators to see the variety of boats used in the event.
Following the weigh-in, the fish will be released back into the water.
On the river banks, an array of supporting sponsors’ tents will showcase a range of he latest boating accessories and fishing tackle.
Maclean offers a range of motels and dining options and surely rates as one of the prettiest villages in the state.
