From tinnies to yachts and spinning reels to light lures, The Brisbane International Boat Show (BIBS) will take over the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre for five days from Wednesday, August 27 to Sunday, August 31.

Now in its 48th year, BIBS sparks serious interest among boat enthusiasts and novices alike.

With 221,773 registered vessels in Queensland and rising (up from 212,156 in May, 2007), boating is clearly a serious business and serious fun.

Marine Queensland marketing manager Helen Kenniff said whether those attending were in the market for a new boat, jet ski, fishing rod or even a job in a marine industry, they would not leave disappointed.

'If people are looking for a boat, they can talk to the experts face-to-face under one roof. Or, if you want to take your kids out fishing and would like to learn more about where to look for a particular type of fish and how to catch them, then the educational aspect of the show will be exactly what you are looking for,' she said.

'Even those looking at a career in the marine industry can get along and speak with boat builders, water police and naval officers.'

Kenniff said the big news in the boating world for this year’s event was that exhibitor Kratzmann’s Marine had just announced they would be unveiling a custom-built Allison for Australian touring car legend Craig Lowndes.

Craig will also be on hand to sign autographs and have a chat while he’s there.
' Other industry news this year for those wanting a champagne boat on a beer budget is the ‘boat share’ concept really taking off,' she said.

'The boat share experts will be on hand to discuss syndicated-or-part ownership of a luxury vessel. Other appeals of this type ownership has is having things like maintenance and mooring looked after on your behalf.

'This is an exciting trend allowing more people to enter the market at a level of prestige and comfort that might have otherwise been out of their reach. It is also practical, with many people just not having the time to get out on a weekly-or-fortnightly basis and find their vessel sitting unused for much of the time.'
