Sail-World.com : Amazing Traditions
It's not everyday that you hear a raceboat honor their Race Committee with a bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace prior to the first gun, but that's exactly what happened yesterday aboard Nellie, Jeff Boal and Fernando Alva's Bristol condition 60-foot Herreshoff gaff cutter (built in 1903). Yet when Alva took up the pipes and played Amazing Grace, his tune perfectly matched the scene unfolding at the 38th annual Panerai-sponsored Opera House Cup: Elegant, yachts of a proud yesteryear gracefully plying the waters of Nantucket Sound as an eight-knot breeze carried the notes across their canvas wings. While the airs were light throughout the day—not Nellie's conditions—the course provided an unbelievable stage, featuring storied 12-Meters, Herreshoff's, Alden's, and Sparkman and Stephens (amongst others) designs. Boats with names such as Bolero, When And If, Weatherly, and Spartan are not exactly common sights outside of classic-yacht regattas, which, while certainly old-fashioned in their traditions, are certainly not shy on strong competition and a strong Corinthian tradition. And when it comes to racing classics, truly, there are few places as classic to sail them than Nantucket. Meanwhile, in Weymouth, England, the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta wrapped up yesterday with strong finishes from US SAILING Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) members. In Womens Match Racing, Team Tunnicliffe (Anna Tunnicliffe, Molly Vandemoer and Debbie Capozzi) secured a Bronze Medal, as did Erin Maxwell and Isabelle Kinsolving Farrar. Surprisingly, these were USSTAG's only medals, but top-ten finishes were posted in four other classes as well. Be sure to check out the great image galleries from the various medal races. On deck this week: the 18ft Skiff International Regatta. Keep your eyes pegged to San Francisco Bay, where these ultra-fast skiffs just may help show the world why the Bay truly is the best option for hosting the 34th Defense. Just don't expect to hear the soulful moan of bagpipes as these carbon-fiber speedsters come ripping past.
