Powerboat P1 today confirmed Vigo as the venue for the first ever Powerboat P1 Grand Prix to be staged in Spain. The historic port and biggest city in Galicia will host the fifth round of the 2008 P1 World Championship from 12th to 14th September.
P1 is the pinnacle of powerboat racing, with the fastest mono hull boats competing over 14 races across three continents for the world championship title. The 2008 series has been boosted by a record entry of 24 teams, providing the marine industry with a global marketing platform and spectators and TV viewers with a world class spectacle.
Speaking at the launch of the Spanish Grand Prix of the Sea, Managing Director of Powerboat P1, Jim O’Toole said: 'As the international appeal of Powerboat P1 grows, we are breaking new ground with our race venues and the decision to come to Spain was as a result of the warm and positive response we received from the city of Vigo in our initial discussions. Vigo not only has the infrastructure and facilities required for a Powerboat P1 event but it is also a 'city of the sea' in every way.'
O'Toole added: 'The encouragement we have received from the city of Vigo, the region of Galicia and the powerboat federations of Galicia and Spain gives me every confidence that this will be an outstanding Grand Prix weekend. Spain is a major market for the European marine industry, with a strong history of powerboat racing, and the country has a proud record of staging world class sports events.'
Vigo's Deputy Mayor, Santiago Dominguez said: 'It is a tremendous honour for Vigo to host the Powerboat P1 Grand Prix for the first time in Spain. We really believe in the event and hope that this will be the start of a long and successful relationship with the P1 World Championship. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone here in September.'
Recognising the potential of Powerboat P1’s global reach and the impact of the Grand Prix events on the local economy, more and more cities and resort destinations are investing in P1 to secure the rights to its dynamic sports and entertainment platform. This year more than 500,000 people are expected to attend the seven events in Europe, Tunisia and Bahrain, with a worldwide television audience in excess of 100 million. The opening event of the season will be the Italian Grand Prix of the Sea from 9th to 11th May at the Adriatic resort of San Benedetto del Tronto. www.powerboatp1.com/
